Sleeve Gastrectomy — what is it?
Sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent obesity surgery in which about 75–80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically (closed method), leaving a small banana/tube-shaped stomach behind.
Weight loss is achieved through two mechanisms: less food is eaten as stomach volume shrinks, and appetite drops markedly because the region producing the hunger hormone (ghrelin) is removed. The operation takes 40–60 minutes under general anesthesia through 4–5 small ports.
It can provide marked improvement in obesity-related diseases such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. Lasting success depends on post-operative nutrition and exercise habits.
How is it done?
- 1
Preparation & tests
Detailed blood tests, endoscopy and an anesthesia assessment are performed.
- 2
Laparoscopic surgery
Through 4–5 small ports the stomach is reduced to a tube and the removed part is taken out.
- 3
Recovery & nutrition
A 3–4 day hospital stay; a gradual nutrition program progressing from liquids to solids.
Benefits
- Significant and lasting weight loss
- Improvement in type-2 diabetes and hypertension
- Appetite control via reduced hunger hormone
- Closed (laparoscopic) method, small scars
- Short hospital stay
- Marked increase in quality of life
Who is it for?
- Those with BMI 40 and above
- Those with BMI over 35 plus conditions such as diabetes/hypertension
- Those unable to get lasting results with diet and exercise
- Those found suitable for anesthesia
Aftercare
- Liquids at first, then a gradual move to puree and solid food
- Small portions, eating slowly and chewing well
- Regular adherence to vitamin–mineral supplements
- Regular exercise and follow-up examinations
Frequently asked questions
How soon is discharge?
Usually discharged within 3–4 days.
Are there scars?
Only a few small port marks remain with the closed method.
Is weight regained?
Results are lasting when nutrition and exercise advice is followed; some weight may return if old habits resume.
Will it affect my diabetes?
A significant proportion of patients see marked improvement in type-2 diabetes.
Is the surgery risky?
Like any surgery it carries risks, but in experienced hands laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is considered safe.
Can I plan a pregnancy?
It is usually recommended 12–18 months after surgery, once weight has stabilised.
